This episode of the MIX Podcast features Michael Allen King, a professor in the Costello College of Business at George Mason University, discussing how hobbies can meaningfully enhance confidence, motivation, professional success, and creative output.

Professor King reflects on his long-standing passion for model rocketry and explains how engaging deeply in a hands-on hobby has:

  • Expanded his professional and personal community

  • Created opportunities to mentor and give back

  • Strengthened his intrinsic motivation

  • Increased his confidence in tackling complex problems

  • Stimulated creativity in his academic and professional work

At the center of his rocketry journey is the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX), a makerspace and media lab open to undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty. The MIX provides tools, fabrication resources, and collaborative space to support both academic and passion-driven projects across varying levels of complexity.

Dr. King emphasizes the MIX’s role not just as a fabrication facility, but as an ecosystem that supports experimentation, interdisciplinary learning, and community-building. In his view, access to a space like the MIX enables individuals to pursue hobbies at a higher level, which in turn positively impacts their professional performance and personal growth.
