MIX Partners with GMU TV on Custom Foam Fabrication

The MIX recently partnered with Vik Narayan, Director of Engineering at GMU TV, on a custom foam fabrication project designed to help protect and organize audio equipment used by the GMU TV team for productions and events across campus and beyond.

Working alongside MIX Manager Dr. Max Kazemzadeh, Vik developed a measured digital model of a piece of equipment using CAD software, creating a precise template that could then be fabricated from foam to fit securely inside a custom carrying case.

The project demonstrates how the MIX can provide practical fabrication solutions for university departments while helping teams reduce costs and develop new in-house capabilities. According to Vik, GMU TV has many additional pieces of equipment that could benefit from custom-fabricated foam inserts, creating an opportunity to save money that would otherwise be spent commissioning an outside company.

More importantly, the project opens the door to continued collaboration between GMU TV and the MIX, combining GMU TV’s production expertise with the MIX’s capabilities in CAD, digital fabrication, prototyping, and making. What began as a single custom project could become an ongoing partnership—and another example of how the MIX helps turn campus needs into opportunities for innovation.
